Frequently Asked Questions

Like all sports, tournament operators or schools may choose to charge fees to cover costs of uniforms, team managers, and other expenses. This varies between different competitions.

We recommend students self-organise by having a captain join the NZ Esports School Discord (A communication platform used for esports) and adding the opposing team inside their games. Students can either play from home or from a provided space at the school.

Schools are responsible for ensuring teams show-up or we have notice in advance of a team forfeiting their game for the week. If any school is an unreported no-show for more than 2 weeks in a row, they will be removed from the tournament and fined.

Games official start time will be 4.15pm on the day of competition. This is to allow for teams who are playing from school, as well as give students who play from home a chance to get home in time. Official competition days can be found on each leagues information page. Games may be rescheduled within 48 hours if both teams agree.

If both teams agree to a new time within 48 hours of the official match time, they can play at any time. However, if teams cannot agree, the official match time stands and any team who cannot play will be forfeited. If teams cannot consistently commit to a the official match time, they should reconsider entering a team. During registration, teams may select 'unable to reschedule' and will be marked.
Yes. Your registration must include the contact information of a valid teacher in charge who is aware of the competition.
  • Very little. Submit the teams information, and make sure that your students show up for the game time ready to play.

  • We may be in touch with the teacher in charge if we have a reported issue with student conduct or no-shows.

  • Some schools may wish to designate an after-school classroom with space for their students to compete and to run a complimentary esports club, however this is not necessary to compete. Most students have the equipment and knowledge to compete from home if you are just getting started.
Of course! There is nothing stopping your school from competing in multiple esports competitions. However it's important to know that NZSS Esports is the only official and regulated competition supported by the NZ Government. This competition was created to ensure that student competitors can compete in a safe environment where their only interactions are with police vetted and trained officials, student data is not sold or mishandled, and the competition is not run for commercial profit.
As long as they do not clash with other games, yes.
